Nord-du-Québec

The Giant of the North

Covering more than half of the province’s total landmass, Nord-du-Québec is a vast territory defined by its sheer scale and raw materials. Located north of the 49th parallel, it is a region where heavy industrial projects operate in close proximity to the communities of the Cree and Inuit nations.

Key Economic Drivers

  • Mining & Critical Minerals: This is Quebec’s primary mining district. The region is a major producer of gold, nickel, and diamonds. More recently, it has become the focal point for extracting lithium and other critical minerals needed to supply North America’s electric vehicle and battery markets.

  • Hydroelectric Power: The James Bay hydroelectric network (Complexe La Grande) is one of the largest power systems in the world. It generates a massive percentage of Quebec’s total electricity, powering homes, heavy industry, and exports across borders.

  • Forestry & Specialized Construction: The southern portion of the region (Jamésie) sustains a highly productive lumber industry. Additionally, the constant need to build and maintain remote industrial camps supports a specialized, heavy-duty construction and logistics sector.
